The great architect Joseph Paxton, designer of the Crystal Palace, arrived in Lismore in 1850 where he carried out numerous additions to Lismore Castle. His extraordinary work is still largely reflected in the present skyline. He also had a passion for gardening and cultivated the Cavendish Banana – the most consumed variety of banana in the western world!
